How to Play Pool Rummy
The game is similar to that of Points Rummy. One element that makes it different from other variants is the elimination of players. Let us take a closer look at the game.
Cards and Players: Usually 2 to 6 players play the game using one or two standard decks of 52 cards each plus one Joker per deck. The Joker plays a crucial role in the game.
Toss and Dealing:Rummy Each player is dealt 13 cards randomly, one at a time. A random toss is made to decide the player who will make the first move
Objective of the Game: The objective of the game is to arrange cards in sequences, or sequences and sets, and make a valid declaration. You must have at least two sequences out of which one must be a pure sequence. The remaining cards should be arranged in sequences or sets.
RummyTo win this game, players should score as low as possible and not reach the maximum pool limit, i.e. 101 points (101 pool) or 201 points (201 pool). The player who reaches that limit gets eliminated and the last player left alone at the table wins the game.
Play: When cards are dealt, the remaining cards are placed face down on the table to form the closed deck. The top card from the closed deck is placed face up on the table to form the open deck.
On their turn, every player has to draw a card from the closed deck or the open deck and then discard one card to the open deck. When your cards are arranged according to the rules, you can declare by discarding the 14th card to the “Finish Slot.” The player who meets the objective of the game first is the winner.
How is Score Calculated in Pool Rummy
RummyIn Pool Rummy, the winner of the game gets zero points. The losing players get points on the basis of the ungrouped cards in their hands. The values of the cards are given below:
Face cards: Rummy(Ks, Qs, Js) and aces (A’s): 10 points each
Numbered cards: Rummy(2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10): Same as their face values.
Jokers (printed/wild): Zero points.
The Winner’s Score: The player who meets the objective of the game first is the winner. The winnings are calculated by using the following formula:
Winnings = (Entry fee X Number of players) – Junglee Rummy fee.
RummySuppose 5 players are playing a Pool Rummy game that has a fixed entry fee of Rs. 200 each. The prize pool of the game will be 200 x 5 = Rs.1000. The winner of the game will get the following amount as the prize: Rs. 1000 – Junglee Rummy fee.
Losing Players’ Score: Here is the point calculation for losing players:
If a player has created two sequences, including a pure sequence, only the points of the ungrouped cards will be added up.
If a player declares without any sequence, the points of all the cards will be added up.
If a player makes an invalid declaration, the penalty points will be 80.
RummyIf a player misses three consecutive turns, he/she will be automatically dropped out of the game, with a penalty of 40 points in 101 Pool and 50 points in 201 Pool.
Maximum Score of a Player: In Pool Rummy, a player gets eliminated when he/she reaches the maximum score limit of 101 points (in 101 pool) or 201 points (in 201 pool).
Pool rummy is the only variant where players are allowed to split prize money, depending on their drop counts. In 101 Pool, the ‘Split’ option can be used when the total score of all the players at the end of the final round is greater than or equal to 61. Similarly, in 201 Pool, players can opt for this feature when the total score is greater than or equal to 151.
Please be informed that the ‘Split’ option works only when there is a mutual understanding among all the players involved. If a player refuses to split the prize money, the option cannot be used.
How does the “Drop” option work in Pool Rummy?
RummyA player can exit the deal by using the “Drop” button. But the player can join the game back with penalty points.
In Pool Rummy, there are two types of drops:
- Penalty Points
- First Drop
- Middle Drop
- Consecutive Drop
